Research Degrees Committee is a Council committee established in accordance with Council Procedure 1 - Committees . Research Degrees Committee is accountable to University Research and Innovation Committee for fulfilling the following terms of reference.

Terms of reference

Research Degrees Committee:

  • develops and recommends to University Research and Innovation Committee to recommend to University Academic Board policies and procedures relating to research higher degree supervision, training and research in the University and course requirements for the PhD degree;
  • advises University Research and Innovation Committee on the provision and delivery of resources and facilities for research degree training and research including development of research students’ graduate capabilities;
  • in conjunction with Learning and Teaching Unit, eLearning Services, the Library, the Office of Research and other support departments, organises and conducts training and information sessions for research higher degree students and supervisors;
  • coordinates the annual Course Reports for higher degree research and reports on outcomes to the University Research and Innovation Committee;
  • considers for approval, in accordance with University policy ( D/5.3 ), recommendations from faculty academic boards regarding the admission, supervision and examination of research higher degree students;
  • monitors and approves the progress, supervision and examination of research higher degree students with attention to cohort trends within the University and reports on these matters to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Commercialisation);
  • determines the final outcome of Second Stage grievance processes relating to research higher degree students;
  • monitors and determines policy and best practice in supervisor accreditation within the University relating to research higher degree supervision and reports on outcomes to the University Research and Innovation Committee;
  • considers applications and determines recipients for domestic postgraduate research scholarships;
  • recommends to University Academic Board (or delegate) the award of research degrees to candidates, through Student Business Services;
  • considers nominations for QUT Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Awards and recommends recipients to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Commercialisation) for approval.

Membership

  • Dean of Research and Research Training ex officio as Chair
  • Manager, Research Students Centre ex officio
  • Director, International Graduate Research ex officio
  • Three associate professors / professors nominated by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Commercialisation), where membership is constituted with due regard for breadth of disciplinary representation
  • A nominee of each executive dean with faculty wide responsibility for higher degree research programs
  • One postgraduate student nominated by the Dean of Research and Research Training.

A nominee of the Registrar is secretary, usually a nominee of the Dean of Research and Research Training.

Tenure and frequency of meeting

Terms of office are as detailed in section 6 of Council Procedure 1 - Committees .

Research Degrees Committee normally meets on a monthly basis.

Reporting

Following each meeting, Research Degrees Committee reports to the next meeting of University Research and Innovation Committee.
