Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Descent Policy

Section 1 - Purpose

(1) QUT is committed to ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students receive the necessary support to ensure they access, participate and achieve success at university through offering a range of targeted services, programs and opportunities.

(2) As a condition of access or eligibility to this targeted assistance, students may be asked to provide evidence confirming their Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent. This Policy sets out the evidence the university will accept to confirm a student’s Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent for determining eligibility.

Section 2 - Application

(3) This Policy applies to current and prospective students seeking to access services, programs and opportunities at QUT that are specifically designed for the benefit of people of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.

Section 3 - Roles and Responsibilities

Position Responsibility
All staff Implement policy and ensure it is supported by administrative procedures for relevant programs and services.

Communicate policy to ensure students are aware of the Policy.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Australians) Reviews policy and approves related procedures.
Indigenous Australian Advisory Committee Provides advice, strategy and direction on elements of the policy where required.

Section 4 - Confirming Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Descent

Definition of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander

(4) For the purpose of this Policy, the definition of an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is adopted and defined in the definition below.

(5) This definition must be met when confirming Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.

(6) If it is necessary to confirm a student’s Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, documentary evidence must be provided.

(7) The minimum standard of acceptable evidence is set out in the Confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Descent Procedure (QUT staff access only).

(8) The individual student is responsible for confirming their own Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.

Section 5 - Definitions

Term Definition
Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Person  An Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander is a person who is of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent; identifies as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander; and is accepted as such by the community in which they live or have lived.
