6.1.1 VIP visitors and security

As a university, QUT encourages open debate and freedom of speech and recognises the rights of staff and students to express their views on matters of public interest.

At the same time, the University takes seriously its obligation to provide a safe environment for students, staff and visitors to its campuses, including VIP visitors. Visitors who may be accorded VIP status will include, but may not necessarily be limited to, the following:

  • Members of State or Federal Parliament
  • The Governor or Governor-General
  • Members of the Judiciary
  • Celebrities and other prominent individuals
  • Members of the diplomatic or consular corps
  • Other foreign government representatives or political figures
  • Vice-Chancellors / Presidents of foreign universities
  • Other visitors designated as VIPs by the Department of the Premier and Cabinet.

Organisational areas arranging visits of VIPs to campus must:

  1. advise the Vice-Chancellor's Office in writing of the visit
  2. provide written notification of the visit to the Security Manager including the following details:
    • Name and position of person making the request
    • Name of key contact for the event
    • The VIP's name and a description of the nature of the VIP's role
    • Date and duration of the event
    • Location of the event
    • The nature of proposed activities to be conducted
    • A list of invitees
    • Whether the event will be open to the media
    • A description of known or potential threats.

Security will provide advice to the organisational area and may forward details of the planned event to the Queensland Police Service for its assessment as to whether police protection is required.
