One of the University's major functions is to educate its students and QUT is committed to the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of teaching and learning and the provision of service to its students. Excellence in teaching and learning involves students as active participants in their educational experience, within which exist responsibilities and expectations which the University and its students can legitimately and fairly expect of each other. The purpose of the student charter is two-fold: it aims firstly to describe the expectations students can hold as they receive their education. Secondly, it describes what can be expected of students in undertaking their studies to enhance the quality of their educational experience.

The statements outlined within this charter complement, but should not be regarded as a substitute for, the provisions of the Queensland University of Technology Act and the statutes, rules, policies and procedures made pursuant to the Act. The charter seeks to articulate the obligations and responsibilities of staff and students and to assist students' understanding of the environment in which they are participating.
