4.5.1 Appointment and responsibilities of an institute director (Tier 1)

Institute director positions are normally appointed at the senior staff level for terms of up to five years. The Vice-Chancellor approves the appointment of an institute director (see B/4.4.6 ). Institute directors are responsible to the Vice-Chancellor and report through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Commercialisation). Institute directors appointed at the SSG level participate in the annual performance planning and review process for senior staff (PPR-SS) (see B/9.3 ), and are reviewed on the basis of the agreed objectives of the institute (see D/4.1.6 ).

The responsibilities of an institute director are provided in A/3.3.10 .

4.5.2 Appointment and responsibilities of an externally funded centre director (Tier 2)

Appointment and responsibilities of Tier 2 centre directors (externally funded centres) are the same as for faculty-based research centre directors (see D/4.5.3 and A/3.3.9 ).

4.5.3 Appointment and responsibilities of a faculty-based research centre director (Tier 3)

Faculty-based research centre director roles are normally appointed at the senior staff level for a three-year renewable term. Where a faculty-based research centre director role and faculty research director / assistant dean (research) role are served concurrently, the appointment term may be extended to up to five years.

The Vice-Chancellor approves the appointment of a faculty-based research centre director (see B/4.4.6 ). Faculty-based research centre directors report to the relevant executive dean of faculty, through the Associate or Assistant Dean - Research, where applicable. Faculty-based research centre directors appointed at the SSG level participate in the annual performance planning and review process for senior staff (PPR-SS) (see B/9.3 ), as it relates to their centre director role.

The responsibilities of a faculty-based research centre director are provided in A/3.3.9 .
