9.2.1 Grading Scale
9.2.1 Grading ScaleThe award of grades should be a deliberative process which requires the exercise of professional judgement to avoid the possibility of random and systematic errors. Under the criterion referenced assessment system (see section C/9.1.3 ), some schools may develop non-numeric labels and descriptive meanings for grades, but the use of descriptors does not replace the numeric grades on a 7-point scale which are used for purposes such as the calculation of grade point average. The following descriptors are offered as guidance only. It is recognised that these generic descriptors, in whole or in part, will not have universal application. Pass Grades Each passing grade subsumes and goes beyond the grades lower than it. 7 - High Distinction Provides evidence of deep and critical understanding in relation to the unit objectives, competence in using the discourse/s of the relevant knowledge community/ies, and ingenuity, creativity and entrepreneurship in application. 6 - Distinction Provides evidence of the integration and evaluation of critical ideas, principles and theories in relation to unit objectives and the application of knowledge in new professional situations in flexible combinations to produce a novel, calculated effect. 5 - Credit Provides evidence of learning going beyond mere replication of content knowledge or skill to show understanding of key ideas, awareness of their relevance, some use of synthesising and analytical skills and the ability to apply fundamental concepts and skills of the unit with some originality or insight. 4 - Pass Provides sufficient evidence of learning, such as demonstrations of knowledge of fundamental concepts and basic skills and some attempt at application, to be considered satisfactory or adequate or competent or capable in relation to unit objectives. 3 - Low Pass Provides evidence of limited and unconnected learning which falls short of demonstrating all unit objectives. A grade of 3 is a pass which can be gained by concession granted for deficiencies through:
S3 - Pass Supplementary Final grade awarded following satisfactory completion of supplementary assessment. S - Satisfactory (where approved for use). Note : A grade of 3 counts as a passing grade for the purpose of completing award requirements and fulfilling prerequisite requirements. The limit on the number of grades of 3 which may be credited towards an award is specified at http://www.studentservices.qut.edu.au/assess/performance/performance/limits.jsp. When eligibility for graduation is being determined, the number of 3 grades included in any credit based on studies at QUT or elsewhere may be taken into account . Grades of S3 are not regarded as equivalent to grades of 3 for the purposes of completing award requirements. Fail Grades 2 - Fail Provides minimal evidence of learning in relation to unit objectives. S2 - Fail Supplementary 1 - Low Fail Provides little or no evidence of learning in relation to unit objectives. K - Withdrawn - Failure U - Unsatisfactory (where approved for use) Other Results E - Exempt W - Withdrawn Unfinalised Results A - Result Unfinalised - The result will be issued when available. SA - Supplementary Assessment - Student is to undertake supplementary assessment. DA - Deferred Assessment - Student is to undertake deferred assessment. T - Assessment Continues - Studies extend over more than one teaching period. Related Documents
