THIS POLICY IS CURRENTLY UNDER REVIEW -
CONTACT Director, Teaching and Learning Support Services FOR FURTHER DETAILS. |
The University accepts the use of the Internet in teaching and
learning, class assignments and academic research, subject to the
following guidelines.
-
Pedagogical and equitable practice must be maintained when
the Internet is used as a teaching and learning tool, eg
-
in planning and supporting student access to the
Internet
-
in delivery of teaching and learning materials
-
in assessment
-
in unit communications.
-
The University expects that research integrity will be
maintained regardless of the nature of the information sources
used.
-
Information taken from the Internet should be fixed in time
and the route used to access the information should be specified.
Care should be exercised in authenticating information and
critically evaluating it for accuracy and potential bias. When
student work is examined, Internet-based information quoted or
cited should be carefully scrutinised in order that students may
learn sound practice when seeking and using information from the
Internet.
-
Faculties which have specified citation formats for
information from traditional sources should extend this to
include preferred citation practices for Internet-based
information. Where such formats are not specified, commonly used
formats are acceptable. These may be found via the University
Library's Web Page (
http://www.library.qut.edu.au/
)
-
The ease with which Internet-based information can be down loaded and manipulated
may result in occurrences of copyright violation or plagiarism. University
policies on these issues apply to use of Internet-based information. See section
F/5.1
and section
C/9.3
.
-
The ease with which Internet-based information is accessed
may result in it being the preferred source of information for
class assignments. This may result in the exclusion of important
and necessary but traditionally formatted information. Students
should be encouraged to use appropriate information resources
with an emphasis on quality as opposed to ease of access.
-
The University supports the provision of information for
students as a helpful introduction for students attempting to use
the Internet for their assignments, eg
Using the Internet for
Information Resources - A Student Guide
(

).
