The terms computer assisted learning (CAL) and computer based education (CBE) encompass computer assisted or aided instruction (CAI), computer managed or management of learning, and other uses of computers in direct support of teaching and learning. The term 'faculties' includes non-academic areas where training of staff or students is part of the unit's function, except where denoted.

Teaching faculties will consult with the Teaching and Learning Support Services Department (TALSS) of the Division of Technology, Information and Learning Support with regard to applications of computer technology which are in direct support of teaching, learning and management of the educational progress of its students. Non-academic areas of the University are encouraged to contemplate the use of computer technology for training needs, and will consult TALSS in this regard.

Teaching faculties will consult TALSS before purchasing off-the-shelf courseware, whether for student use or staff training, so that advice on effectiveness, delivery and management aspects of use of the courseware may be obtained. Similarly, non-faculty areas will consult TALSS before purchasing computer-based training packages, for identical reasons.

Faculties must consult with TALSS before purchasing authoring languages or systems or other software intended for production, management or delivery of CAL materials, or management of learning activities or student progression.

Faculties must also consult TALSS before purchasing computers or workstations which will deliver CAL materials produced or delivered by TALSS.
