Field trips include

  • organised field excursions involving staff and students which form an integral part of a unit within an approved course of study
  • visits by staff to field study sites for the purpose of planning organised excursions
  • industrial visits which form an integral part of a unit within an approved course
  • visits connected with student projects designated as part of an approved course.

Field excursions

Field excursions are regarded as an essential component of many QUT courses. As such, they may be

  • compulsory, in which case attendance is specified in the course requirements and a student's progression is dependent on his or her having satisfied all requirements associated with the excursion
  • optional, in which case attendance will assist the student in understanding the unit but progression is not dependent on his or her having participated in the excursion.

Where a field excursion is classified as compulsory, provision must be made in the course requirements by

  • designation of a separate unit with its own unit code
  • a general statement requiring students to attend all field trips designated as compulsory as approved by the faculty academic board and promulgated on commencement of each semester.

Where field excursions are an essential component of any unit, this should be stated clearly in the unit synopsis.

A listing of all compulsory field trips should be promulgated and drawn to the attention of students at the commencement of each semester. Where details of the trip have not been finalised or are subject to change, this should be noted. See E/7.2 for details of financial arrangements for and reimbursement of student expenses relating to field excursions.
