4.11.1 Approval for discontinuation of a course

Courses may be discontinued at any time, usually because student numbers are not viable.

A move to cease student intakes into a course begins the process of course discontinuation, and requires approval by University Academic Board (see Appendix 10e for the University's course discontinuation proposal proforma). Once University Academic Board has approved discontinuation of the course, the Dean of Studies, Office of Teaching Quality will then advise all stakeholders and modify the list of Current Courses which is maintained on the Office of Teaching Quality website and provide an expiry date in the course record in the student information system.

Discontinued courses should normally remain open for the minimum period of time required for any continuing students to complete in normal progression. Once all continuing students have completed the course, the course should be closed by making the course record inactive in the student information system.

In the case where a discontinued course is directly replaced by a new course, University Academic Board approval for discontinuation is given at the time of approval of the new course, and the course discontinuation proforma is not required. The course approval documentation, however, should clearly state transition arrangements for students in the discontinued course.
