3.7.1 Invitation of visiting fellows

Faculties may invite as visiting fellows professionals and academics who can make a contribution to the teaching and/or research programs of a faculty, school or research centre but who are not eligible for invitation as adjunct professors (see B/3.6 ). A proforma for the nomination of a visiting fellow is available from the Human Resources Department website.

A visiting fellow will participate, at a level equivalent to one of the sub-professorial academic classifications (ie senior lecturer, lecturer, associate lecturer), in one or more of the following activities:

  • undergraduate and postgraduate teaching;
  • participation in research programs of a school, faculty or research centre;
  • staff and student seminars;
  • discussion with faculty staff on course, subject area and unit structure content and development;
  • workshops, seminars, University lectures, continuing education programs, and conferences for the general public or for specific outside groups.

All visiting fellows invited by QUT should be aware of the University's Intellectual Property Policy (see D/3.1 ) which is a condition of invitation.

The number of visiting fellows invited in any year will be determined by each faculty in the context of its annual planning processes.

Visiting fellows may be paid an amount equivalent to a full-time or part-time academic level, remuneration for casual work, or no remuneration at all. In determining whether to recommend invitation of an individual as a visiting fellow (which will depend on qualifications, experience or standing within the discipline), and the level of remuneration to be paid to a visiting fellow, faculties should consult the position classification standards for academic staff contained in the QUT Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (Academic Staff) , Schedule 3.

For the period of invitation, visiting fellows may also be granted the following benefits and privileges in addition to remuneration:

  • one economy return airfare to enable the visiting fellow to take up the invitation and return home afterwards;
  • use of the facilities of a faculty, school or research centre including office space, computer and telephone;
  • full use of QUT facilities including libraries and computing facilities;
  • workers' compensation insurance protection if paid remuneration by QUT.

Executive deans of faculty / heads of division approve the invitation of visiting fellows.
