Relationship of this part to election statute Part 1 - PreliminaryThis university statute may be cited as the Queensland University of Technology (QUT Alumni) Statute 2008. In this university statute – “alumni election” means the election of members of QUT Alumni to the council of the university under section 15 of the Act. “annual general meeting” means a meeting of QUT Alumni held once in each calendar year to which all active members of QUT Alumni are invited by public notice. “election statute” means Queensland University of Technology (Conduct of Elections for Elected Members of Council) Statute 2003. “predecessor institution” means any of the following educational institutions formerly operating in Queensland: Brisbane School of Arts, Brisbane Technical College, Central Technical College, Brisbane Kindergarten Training College, Queensland Teachers’ Training College, Kelvin Grove Teachers’ College, Kedron Park Teachers’ College, Queensland Institute of Technology; Brisbane Kindergarten Teachers’ College, North Brisbane College of Advanced Education, Kelvin Grove College of Advanced Education, Brisbane College of Advanced Education. “registrar” means the university’s chief administrative officer, or a person delegated by that officer to perform a function of the registrar under this university statute. “the Act” means the Queensland University of Technology Act 1998. 3. Repeal of QUT Alumni Statute 1999 Queensland University of Technology Statute No. 4 (QUT Alumni) 1999 is repealed. Part 2 - Composition of QUT AlumniThe membership of QUT Alumni comprises the following categories of persons –
(1) The registrar must maintain a roll of members of QUT Alumni. (2) The roll must contain the following information–

(2) When a person first becomes a member of QUT Alumni, the registrar must record the person as an active member on the roll. (3) A member is recorded as inactive if –
(4) The registrar must vary the status of an inactive member on the roll if the member notifies the registrar that they wish to be recorded as an active member. (1) There is a president of QUT Alumni. (2) The president chairs the annual general meeting of QUT Alumni. (3) The president is elected in accordance with the procedures for alumni elections set out in the election statute as varied by part 3 of this university statute. (4) The president holds office for the term specified in sections 19 and 23 of the Act. Part 3 - Election of members to council8. Relationship of this part to election statute (1) This part specifies some procedures for alumni elections. (2) This part must be read in conjunction with the procedures specified in the election statute, but to the extent of any inconsistency between this part and the election statute, this part prevails. (1) An active member of QUT Alumni may nominate for election to council in either, but not both, of the following sub-categories –
(2) For the purposes of section 16 of the election statute, the election in each sub-category specified in this section is to be treated as a ballot to fill one vacancy. 10. Notice of election and ballot (1) For the alumni election, the notice of election must, in addition to the matters listed in section 8 of the election statute, specify the manner in which votes are to be cast by active members. (2) Despite section 12(1) of the election statute, the returning officer provides the notice of ballot only by –
(3) In addition to the matters specified in section 12(2) of the election statute, the notice of ballot for the alumni election must specify the manner in which an active member of QUT Alumni may obtain the information referred to in sections 12(1)(c) and 12(1)(d) of the election statute. 11. Method of providing ballot paper to members Despite section 12(1)(b) of the election statute, the returning officer for the alumni election must provide ballot papers to an active member of QUT Alumni only if the member –
(1) The section varies the procedures set out in the election statute for the close of voting. (2) The last day of voting for the alumni election is the day for the annual general meeting. (3) To be included in the ballot, a postal vote must be received by the starting time for the annual general meeting. (4) For members who receive ballot papers by attending the annual general meeting, voting closes 15 minutes after the starting time for the meeting. (5) Scrutiny of ballot papers and counting of votes commences after the close of voting at the annual general meeting. (6) The procedures that council prescribes under section 4 of the election statute for ensuring that ballots are kept secret apply to the alumni election. In addition to the requirements specified in section 17 of the election statute, the returning officer must notify the annual general meeting of the result of the election.
